What better way could there be to clean the air in your home than to have a central ducted air circulation system that passes your homes air through a filtration system that could eliminate up to 98% of the pollutants that pass through it? A furnace filter can and should do far more than just help maintain a clean blower and evaporator coil. It can greatly improve the air quality in your home that you and your family breath, by removing pollutants, killing viruses and bacteria, and even removing odors from smoking or pets or in-laws.
There are mainly two types of effective filtration systems available;
Media /Hepa filters:
These filters are basically made of a relatively thick intertwined material that allows air to flow through but captures air born contaminants. These filters come in various efficiencies and are rated by MERV , the higher the MERV rating the more efficient the filter is. These filters are very effective but tend to be some what restrictive to air flow. It is important to check the filter occasionally and I recommend they be replaced every 6 months.
Electronic Air Cleaners:
These filters are the most efficient without being restrictive to air flow. Basically, an electronic air cleaner has metal cells that consist of ionizing wires and collector plates. As pollutant particles pass across the ionizing field they are positively charged and then attach to the negatively charge collector plates. The collector plates are then easily washed every 3 to 4 months and last for several years with proper care and handling. They initial cost of an electronic air cleaner is sometimes as much as 3 times that of a media filter, however, when you consider the cost of media replacements in a few short years the electronic air cleaner becomes the most cost effective as well as the most efficient unit.
